CBD is everywhere. But is it a scam?

  • Many argue that a provision in the 2014 farm bill allowing industrial hemp pilot programs, mostly aimed at the textile industry, actually makes non-THC use of cannabis legal; the much-delayed 2018 farm bill would make CBD and industrial hemp legal nationwide if passed as it stands.

  • Microdosing means using very small amounts of very powerful drugs; sometimes, this can have extremely mild or even totally different effects from what is considered a full dose.
  • Another, using that same public speaking setup that CBD studies have used, found that anxiety treatments are particularly susceptible to the placebo effect, with 40 percent of placebo-treated patients showing a decrease in anxiety symptoms while tasked with speaking to a crowd.

  • Locally, the state issued three grower licenses to farmers in Rock County and nine in Walworth County.

Legal cannabis market to be worth $146.4bn by 2025 (www.verdict.co.uk)

  • Earlier this month, Canada became the second country to fully legalise cannabis.

Opponents, supporters of Prop 2 press on in wake of medical marijuana compromise (www.parkrecord.com)

The Medical Community Is Changing the Way It Views Cerebral Palsy (themighty.com)

  • The conference is a series of courses and workshops for medical professionals to discuss the latest scientific research on the causes and effects of cerebral palsy.
  • Researchers and clinicians are beginning to view cerebral palsy from a lifespan perspective and study how people with CP progress through life physically, psychologically and socially.
  • One workshop I attended discussed how their study used the principles of participatory action research to develop the PEDI-PRO (Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory — Patient-Reported Outcome), an important measurement scale used in physical and occupational therapy.
  • For example, although one of the studies found that people with cerebral palsy who also have intellectual disabilities are less likely to live independently and have strong friendships as adults than people without ID, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for them.
  • There were multiple workshops on chronic pain; the one I attended discussed research investigating the origins of chronic pain in CP.
  • As an adult with cerebral palsy who lives with multiple forms of chronic pain, I was encouraged by how much researchers and clinicians care about addressing this issue.

Lexaria Bioscience: DehydraTECH Could Transform Oral Delivery In Cannabis, Nicotine, NSAIDs, And Vitamins (seekingalpha.com)

  • Source: Lexaria Bioscience Investor Presentation Lexaria’s patent on DehydraTECH currently covers the specific use of the technology for cannabinoids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and nicotine.
  • Despite the noise on their chart from their volatile trading range, Lexaria Biosciences has been steadily trending up since November 2017 (as can be seen above) and is set to benefit from a variety of industry trends across its most promising areas of operation; cannabis, nicotine, NSAIDs, and vitamins.
  • The results from the cannabis-focused testing Lexaria has been running over the past few years and the advantages DehydraTECH has over the current competition are set to capitalize on several trends and regulations that have been developing over the course of US state and Canadian legalization.
  • With the possibility of increased regulations on cigarettes and new restrictions on e-cigarettes, the demand for smoking cessation devices and nicotine alternatives would be expected to grow.
  • While $380K in free cash flow for a $140MM company is nothing impressive, it is a strong signal that the licensing-based revenue model is beginning to positively impact operations and is beginning to push the company closer to profitability; with the expectations of additional agreements to follow as Lexaria furthers refines DehydraTECH.
  • The onset of recreational sales in cannabis, the opioid crisis, and worldwide shifts away from smoking stand to act as strong catalysts for Lexaria in the coming years and could propel the company’s share price even further.

Hemp could be big in Minnesota if it overcomes legal hurdles (kticradio.com)

In a blow to CBD, DEA beats back hemp in court—on a technicality (newhope.com)

Topics: federal law, state law, Department of Justice, federal agency, final rule, amicus brief, federal appeals court, Drug Enforcement Administration

  • “Given the pervasive confusion and irreconcilable conflicts of the law that have led to product seizures, arrests and criminal charges against those involved in the lawful hemp industry, the petitioners believe that the final rule must be invalidated, absent the court clarifying and further resolving these conflicts and their severe consequences,” attorney Bob Hoban, managing partner of Hoban Law Group in Denver who represented the hemp industry in the lawsuit, said in a statement.
  • The law authorized higher education institutions and state agricultural departments to cultivate the plant if “the industrial hemp is grown or cultivated for purposes of research conducted under an agricultural pilot program or other agricultural or academic research,” and the latter activities are authorized under state law.
  • In part, the law defined an “agricultural pilot program” as a “pilot program to study the growth, cultivation or marketing of industrial hemp.” The scope of the “marketing” activities authorized by Section 7606—and whether DEA’s marijuana extract rule conflicted with the 2014 Farm Bill—has been the subject of confusion and debate.
  • According to the petitioners and nearly 30 members of Congress in an amicus brief filed in January 2018 with the Ninth Circuit, cannabinoids like CBD don’t fall within the CSA—even if the compounds are sourced from the flowers of the hemp plant—so long as the activities are carried out under Section 7606 of the Farm Bill; and the plant contains no more than 0.3 percent THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.
  • “While the DEA clearly believes that all extracts of the cannabis flower fall under the definition of controlled substances, such an assertion blatantly subverts the Farm Bill, which explicitly permits any part of the cannabis plant, including the flower, with ‘not more than 0.3 percent’ THC, from being deemed permissible industrial hemp under an approved pilot program,” the bipartisan group of lawmakers wrote in their amicus brief.

How FDA Approved Cannabis Products Could Affect CBD Distribution Channels (newcannabisventures.com)

Topics: drug development, medical cannabis, GlaxoSmithKline, dietary supplement, health claims, patient outcomes, human services, marketing practices

Brightfield Group, a market research firm based in Chicago, expects CBD products to grow from 5% of U.S. cannabis sales today to 12% by 2021, and this doesn’t include the pharmaceutical channel that would open up with the approval of Epidiolex.

The bottom-line, then, is that approval of Epidiolex is likely to be a boon for patients suffering from epilepsy and to open the door to a pharmaceutical distribution pathway for cannabis-derived drugs, but it is also likely to drive significant interest in the broader CBD category.

While there have been some concerns in the industry that GW Pharma might take action to block the sale of CBD by other providers upon approval of Epidiolex by the FDA, we believe this is not the case based on many discussions we have had with the company over the years.

While cannabis or even CBD aren’t required to be rescheduled in order for it to be approved and then marketed by GW Pharma, the approval by the FDA of a CBD product derived from cannabis plants could play a role in the scheduling status of CBD or cannabis in the future.

We believe that the landmark approval of a cannabis-derived drug will not only spur further research and development of FDA-approved cannabis products but also accelerate an already rapidly growing market for the health and wellness market for CBD products, which are derived from industrial hemp and cannabis plants and sold in dispensaries, mail-order or other channels.

The Nebraska Marijuana Decriminalization Initiative would decriminalize the possession of one ounce or less of cannabis, and it’ll require the signatures of 7% of the state’s voters prior to early July in order to get on the ballot.

In other words, even if its residents are overwhelmingly in favor of physicians being able to prescribe medical marijuana — which is indeed the case, according to the aforementioned MSN poll — it’s up to the state’s legislature, not residents, to introduce and pass legislation.

Of the 21 states that don’t have comprehensive medicinal cannabis laws, 17 of these states do have very specific laws on their books allowing cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant often revered for its medical properties, and low-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) products — THC is the psychoactive component that gets you “high” — to be used for select ailments.

Despite putting forward the South Dakota medical marijuana Initiative, and submitting roughly 15,000 signatures, the secretary of state in South Dakota announced on April 16, 2018 that there were not enough valid signatures collected to put the measure on the ballot.

CBD oil is also not to be confused with hemp oil, which is extracted from a different part of the plant and contains little to no CBD or THC.

“CBD oil has become known as a beauty superstar for its versatility and ever-growing list of benefits, and we decided to bring some of that good stuff into your makeup collection,” the brand said in a blog post, citing the ingredient as “conditioning.” That’s a really benign claim, but other products go further, usually touting CBD’s supposed anti-inflammatory and calming properties.

Hemp and marijuana are derived from two different strains of the cannabis plant, but one is grown for its psychoactive effects and the other for industrial purposes.

“In this case, the illegally sold products allegedly contain cannabidiol (CBD), a component of the marijuana plant that is not FDA approved in any drug product for any indication.” A pharmacy professor who has been involved in CBD studies told the Washington Post a few weeks ago that the multitude of CBD claims are “not scientifically founded, in my mind.” If the FDA does approve this CBD-based drug, the only thing that legally can be claimed is that it can treat the specific types of seizures for which it was originally tested, at very specific doses.

No, CBD Oil Won’t Get You Stoned—But It Could Make Travel Less Stressful (cntraveler.com)

It’s still important to properly read the labels on the CBD oils you’re buying, as it can also be derived from hemp’s more psychoactive cousin.

THC is classified as an illegal compound under federal law regardless of whether or not you have a valid medical card or if it is legal in the state you are traveling to.

Make sure to follow TSA guidelines and if you’re traveling with liquids or oils in your carry-on, make sure they are under 3.4 ounces to ensure a completely stress-free trip.

Therapeutic uses of CBD—which comes from hemp, a particular strain of the cannabis plant—have been researched for quite some time, because unlike THC, the active compound in marijuana that gives you that “high” feeling of euphoria and intoxication, CBD isn’t psychoactive.

Why Athletes Are Ditching Ibuprofen for CBD (outsideonline.com)

Topics: pharmaceutical companies, medical marijuana, pain management, clinical trials, naproxen, pain relief, opioid, preclinical studies

“My body is constantly inflamed.” Many athletes in his situation rely on common pain relief like ibuprofen, but when Talansky strained a hip flexor last fall, he reached for a bottle of cannabidiol (CBD), an extract from the cannabis plant, instead.

Research on CBD has been slow to accumulate, largely because the federal government considers marijuana a Schedule I drug—the same classification given to heroin and LSD—making it difficult for researchers to gain access to it for study.

That could change soon: at least 20 clinical trials examining the medical benefits of CBD are currently under way in the U.S., including a $16 million effort by the University of Miami, which is looking into CBD’s effects on brain trauma.

“After purchasing every CBD oil you could buy, we found that a number of companies were selling products that contained almost no cannabidiol, and others contained THC.” While there are many unknowns, anecdotal and preclinical evidence for the efficacy of CBD continues to build.

Food and Drug Administration advisers on Thursday unanimously supported the first-ever government approval of a medication made from cannabis, paving the way for agency clearance by the end of June.

Several parents whose children have been participating in clinical trials of the drug said that their children’s lives have been transformed by the medication.

Michael Privitera, a neurologist at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who was involved in the testing of the drug, said it was a major advance, and it was important that the drug be approved so parents don’t have to buy CBD from medical marijuana dispensaries, which don’t necessarily know the quality of CBD products or the recommended dose.
